Welcome to Shiloh Middle School

Dear Shiloh Families:

This year our school is embarking on a special project, an all school book club called One Book, One School.  Thanks to a generous grant donation from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, every child in our school received a copy of the same book – Rules by Cynthia Lord – and have been asked to read it at home over a six week period.  I am personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special reading project.

Your child has already attended the school-wide kick-off assembly where the program was introduced and the book revealed.  In order for your child to fully participate in this program, we are asking that your child reads the book for approximately 10-15 minutes per night to stay on schedule for book-related activities.  If possible, it would be very beneficial if you set aside a small amount of time each night to read the book with your child.  You can take turns reading, your child can read aloud, or you can read to your child.  This worthwhile family activity will help build a community of readers at our school, as well as a special bond between you and your child at home.  Everyone—students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff—will be participating!

In school, students will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage your child to read carefully for details.  In addition, our staff members are planning a variety of other curricular activities.  Please ensure your child keeps up with the reading so he/she can be included in the school contests and book discussions.  Also, we would love for you to send us photos of you and your child reading Rules.  Photos can be Tweeted to @PCSDShiloh or emailed to gedeonj@parmacityschools.org.   We will display some of these photos around the school to encourage full participation in this reading endeavor.  Every parent who submits a photo will be entered into a drawing for gift cards and other prizes!
Good luck!  I hope you and your child enjoy reading Rules and have some great family discussions about the content of the book.“When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about.”  With your help, we can build a community of readers!
